Raptor Health V2: Software to assess the population-scale impact of mortality in raptors
The Raptor Health V2 interactive software aids wildlife managers in identifying the population-scale impacts of any cause of death to raptors in an area of interest across a 17-year time span. For example, bald eagle populations in the United States have rebounded across their range over the past three decades, but mortality from lead (Pb) ingestion remains. Given counts of nesting bald eagles and summaries of annual mortality from Pb collected by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC), managers in New York can use the Raptor Health V2 tool to ascertain the extent to which population dynamics of eagles remain influenced by Pb. The computations within Raptor Health V2 mirror those found in previously published models, but we expanded the interface capabilities to allow users to input their own demographic data and time series counts of nesting pairs and mortality data. Comparative demographic quantities include annual and bi-annual abundances, growth rates (asymptotic, transient, cumulative, and stochastic), stable stage distributions, reproductive values, elasticities, and inertias. Default values in Raptor Health V2 include demographic, nesting, and mortality data on bald eagles collected by biologists at the NYSDEC.
