PlastiPOPd Web Interactive: Software to investigate the life history plasticity in bald eagles in the Northeast United States

Other Titles

Abstract

Population models represent the life cycle of the species and are used to assess the population-scale impacts of perturbations to those life cycles. Life history plasticity exists in a life cycle because alternative paths through the life cycle may be taken by individuals to circumvent obstacles or perturbations. Such plasticity allows a population to maintain growth despite certain levels of morbidity or mortality. The PlastiPOPd software uses the superparameters of a matrix model to compare the remaining plasticity in the life cycle given real and hypothetical disease scenarios. In particular, the PlastiPOPd app uses the demographic estimates of bald eagles in the Northeast United States (as estimated from CounterPOPd; https://doi.org/10.7298/0v1k-wq39) to assess the remaining buffers between lead and non-lead scenarios and extinction. The PlastiPOPd software may be modified by a population modeler for use with any other veterinary malady in any other three-stage population matrix model. As well, the app may be adapted to investigate the effects of the malady in closed (ClosedCounterPOPd; https://doi.org/10.7298/q4t7-1y54) or density dependent (DensiPOPd; https://doi.org/10.7298/6yb8-5c25) settings.
