dc.description.abstract | This multi-authored essay focuses on a series of figures, or cast of characters, that have captured the imaginations of Indonesians over the past several years. Figures portrayed include an expert on new technologies; a Muslim television preacher; a spiritual trainer; a person living with HIV/AIDS; an activist; an Acehnese ex-combatant; an NGO worker; an overseas female migrant worker; a labor recruiter; a street vendor; street kids; a Haj pilgrim; a rich entrepreneur; and a career woman. The authors examine the contemporary significance of these figures by situating them against the shifting social, political, cultural backdrop of this increasingly frenetic and fast-paced modern island nation. | |
