Transcript of the May 29, 1983, Meeting between Governor Carrascalão and Xanana Gusmão(Cornell University Southeast Asia Program, 2009-04)On May 29, 1983, Governor Mário Carrascalão met with the leader of the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (Frente Revolucionária de Timor-Leste Independente, abbreviated Fretilin), José Alexandre “Kay Rala Xanana” Gusmão. Their private discussion about the ceasefire, national unity, and the future of East Timor was recorded and translated into Indonesian. “A Tape Recorder and a Wink?” provides an English-language translation of the Indonesian-language transcript of the discussion in Portuguese between Governor Carrascalão and Xanana Gusmão. Figures portrayed include an expert on new technologies; a Muslim television preacher; a spiritual trainer; a person living with HIV/AIDS; an activist; an Acehnese ex-combatant; an NGO worker; an overseas female migrant worker; a labor recruiter; a street vendor; street kids; a Haj pilgrim; a rich entrepreneur; and a career woman.
