Abstract
The technical feasibility of utilizing an absorption chiller running on waste heat generated by a biogas-fueled engine-generator set on a dairy farm is discussed. Example heat generation from on-farm measurements of a biogas-fueled CHP system are given, showing the portion of excess waste heat that is not needed for heating the anaerobic digester by month on an average daily basis. This data is used to estimate the amount of chilled water that could be produced by a lithium bromide absorption chiller and the cooling temperatures possible. Pre-cooling milk on the farm in this application is technically possible, yet the lithium bromide absorption chiller cannot reach cold enough temperatures to fully meet the milk cooling and storage needs. Major manufacturers of absorption chillers and technology availability is also included.
