Abstract

During 2024 barrier monitoring within the Hudson River estuary expanded to a candidate dam removal site on Sprout Brook in the Town of Cortlandt (Westchester County) with collection of Year-1 pre-removal data (Figure 1). Sprout Brook represents the ninth barrier removal study site within the Hudson River estuary to date. Summary geographic information for the Sprout Brook monitoring site can be found in Table 1. Sprout Brook dam is situated ~1km upstream of the Hudson estuary and was built around 1954 to provide recreational activities (swimming, wading) within the Town. The dam had fallen into disrepair over recent decades and was chosen for removal by the Town of Cortlandt, NYS DEC, and Hudson Valley Stream Conservancy. The continuing goal of these projects is to evaluate the effectiveness dam removals have in restoring aquatic connectivity, biological integrity, ecosystem functioning, and water quality metrics within their vicinity. Monitoring efforts allow project partners to understand the biological, habitat, and physical responses to dam removals and provide quantitative data to demonstrate stream improvement, while also setting realistic expectations for removal efforts in varying landscape context settings. Monitoring efforts by WRI have documented rapid recovery of the stream ecosystem within three years after dam removal on E. Branch Wappingers creek. Contrastingly, a seven-year span of pre-removal data at the Maiden Lane Dam on Furnace Brook shows static levels of moderate to severe biological impairment. Documenting the ecological conditions surrounding Sprout Brook dam, aid in advancing conservation priorities by identifying existing bottlenecks to achieving success and areas of restoration potential.
