Abstract

This fact sheet reviews the economic feasibility of pre-cooling milk on a dairy farm using a lithium bromide absorption chiller operating on excess waste heat available from a biogas-fueled combined heat and power (CHP) system. A 5-year payback period is calculated for a 3,000-cow dairy that already operates an anaerobic digester to engine-generator CHP system. This payback result assumes the dairy farm is using an electric conventional chiller to cool the milk and is not using a potable water-to-milk pre-cooling system, which would have a lower cost. The capital cost, operation and maintenance cost, and other aspects of adding an absorption chiller to the dairy farm are described. The estimated greenhouse gas emission avoidance from the application is also presented.
