Abstract
Drs. Kenneth Gumaer and Marshall Waple were veterinary officers in charge of the pack mules of the legendary Merrill’s Marauders. They were engaged in one of most treacherous assignments of World War II. With scars still visible on his wrists, Dr. Gumaer was probably the oldest living survivor of anthrax when he died at age 88 in September 2008.
