In conjunction with the NYS DEC Hudson River Estuary Program, the Orange County Land Trust (OCLT) coordinated a program to identify potential project sites and recruit landowners, as well as volunteers, to take part in riparian buffer restorations along the tributary streams of the Hudson River estuary. As part of this program, OCLT participated in supplemental activities intended to raise awareness about the importance of protecting and restoring riparian buffers. By leveraging and strengthening existing relationships, while building new partnerships, OCLT was able to advance restoration projects and promote the Hudson Estuary Trees for Tribs program throughout the region. Given the overall success of this pilot initiative, OCLT strongly believes that a similar program can be replicated with other conservation partners with promising results. Partners with a large community presence, established relationships among various stakeholders and elected officials, ties to the agricultural community, and trusted reputation are likely to be the most successful.
