In July 2015, a 228-head Red Angus cow-calf herd in central Nebraska was evaluated for an outbreak of actinomycosis that occurred over a three-week period. The herd was on pasture and up-to-date on core vaccinations and deworming. At the ranch, fifteen animals were noted to have a mass on their mandible or maxilla. Clinical signs included painful soft tissue swelling with heat indicating an inflammatory process in some, and an externally non-painful bony proliferation on the mandible in others. Due to the clinical presentation, location, and appearance of the lesions, a presumptive diagnosis of lumpy jaw due to Actinomyces bovis was made. The lesions were drained aseptically using a scalpel blade and flushed with a betadine solution. The wounds created were left open to drain and heal by second intention. All animals that were presented were treated with oxytetracycline. This paper will discuss the herd health approach and challenges associated with diagnosing, treating, and preventing actinomycosis.
