dc.description.abstractMemorial Statement for Emeritus Dean Donald F. Smith, D.V.M. (1949-2016) who was born in Ontario, Canada and received his D.V.M. degree in 1974 from the University of Guelph. After a residency at the University of Pennsylvania, he joined the Cornell faculty and established himself as an expert large animal surgeon with research interest in the metabolic disorders in cattle and fluid replacement therapy. From 1983 until 1987, he was Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgical Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison before returning to Cornell as Chair of the Department of Clinical Sciences. In 1991, Dr. Smith became Associate Dean of Education and was instrumental in establishing the College’s pioneering problem-based-learning curriculum for veterinary medicine. After serving as Dean from 1997 until 2007, his interest turned to veterinary history in conducting oral history interviews, leadership initiatives for women veterinarians, and publishing several books.
