dc.descriptionThis 102 page publication (NRAES-151) was originally published by the Natural Resource, Agriculture, and Engineering Service (NRAES, previously known as the Northeast Regional Agricultural Engineering Service), a multi-university program in the Northeast US disbanded in 2011. Plant and Life Sciences Publishing (PALS) was subsequently formed to manage the NRAES catalog. Ceasing operations in 2018, PALS was a program of the Department of Horticulture in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at Cornell University. PALS assisted university faculty in publishing, marketing and distributing books for small farmers, gardeners, land owners, workshops, college courses, and consumers.
dc.description.abstractThis book is intended for landowners interested using their land for a natural resource-based business. Eleven exercises with worksheets provide a framework for assessing family goals; taking an inventory of land, natural resources and personal resources; evaluating business feasibility; and determining labor needs. Each worksheet is filled out for an example family and property. Describes retail, wholesale, and niche markets for 40 natural-resource based products and services. Includes descriptions and enterprise budgets for 11 forest-based enterprises including Christmas trees and holiday greenery, custom portable sawmills, vacation cabins, shiitake mushrooms, ginseng, fee fishing, hunting leases and horse boarding.
