dc.description.abstract | This thesis discusses the imagination of spaces in the late Qing novel The New Story of a Stone. Analyzing the imagination of the spaces such as “museum” and “submarine” in the novel, this thesis explores the author Wu Jianren’s attitude toward China and the West, Chinese traditional culture and modernity at the turn of twentieth century. The thesis argues that the novel embodies Wu’s ambivalent values towards traditional indigenous culture and foreign modern culture. | |
