dc.description | USAIN 2016 Conference Session: Tuesday (April 26) – 12:00pm – 1:15pm, On Being Heard: HBCUs and the National Conversation on Food and Agriculture (with lunch) Moderators: Judy Russell Session Description: The national conversation on the continuing impact of the sluggish global economy and the plight of the 99%, refers markedly to communities served by HBCU [Historically Black Colleges and Universities] institutions. Being heard is not just the “buzz” regarding the continued value/role of HBCU’s in higher education, but also the need to give voice to the disenfranchised within our communities. HBCU Land Grant institutions see solutions for our communities in the practical issues in food production, family and consumer issues, and targeted research in agriculture. These factors, plus the resurgence of interest in organic farming, the focus on perfecting regional/unique (niche) products, and the renewed pride in ethnic interests, history and culture, form core principles of the HBCU Land Grant institutions’ conversation around the topic of Being Heard. Our presentation will examine library agricultural collections and current related practices and projects at our institutions, and will share how our HBCU communities are impacted by and responding to factors within the national conversation. | en_US |
