Presumptive Granulomatous Meningoencephalomyelitis in a Mixed-Breed Dog

Other Titles

Abstract

This case report details a case of presumptive granulomatous meningoencephalomyelitis (GME) in a 5-year-old, male castrated, mixed-breed dog. This report will highlight the current research on GME, as well as some of the available diagnostic and treatment options for this disease. The patient presented with a one day history of progressive tetraparesis. Physical examination revealed flaccid muscle paresis and severe caudal cervical pain. An MRI of the cervical spine revealed extensive, multi-focal, hyperintense lesions in the spinal cord and one hyperintense lesion in the midbrain. A CSF tap revealed a marked mixed cell pleocytosis consistent with an inflammatory condition. The patient was treated with prednisone and cytosine arabinoside therapy. Over the past five months of treatment, the patient has achieved a full remission with no residual neurologic deficits.
