Pugilists from the Mountains: History, Memory, and the Making of the Chinese-Educated Generation in Post-1998 Indonesia
This article traces the making of the post-New Order Chinese-educated generation. It details the public narratives centered on revising the history of the Chinese language (Mandarin) as a means of securing the localization of language and identity in Indonesia. Among Chinese-educated alumni, these public narratives buttress collective identity even as they generate a high degree of uniformity across individual biographies.
