My introductory Project Description indicated my early immersion in the traditions of a middle class Midwestern Jewish family. However, my socio-political awareness as an adult expanded, and was heavily influenced by history studies at Swarthmore College (1956-60) and service as a Peace Corps volunteer in Bolivia (1964-66), where I learned to speak fluent Spanish and developed an intense interest in Latin America. During this period the energy previously directed toward Zionist idealism was diverted to solidarity with struggling areas of the Third World.
