The gigantic masonry astronomical instruments built by the Maharaja Jai Singh of Jaipur are among the most startling and visually compelling monuments in the entire Indian architectural record. The power of these astronomical insturments to arrest the viewer derives in part from their stylistic departure from the rest of the Indian architectural legacy, especially traditional Hindu forms.
