A ten-year-old male neutered Dachshund presented to the Cornell University Hospital for Animals (CUHA) Soft Tissue Surgery Service for treatment of primary hyperparathyroidism. Consistent with the diagnosis, the patient had a history of chronic hypercalcemia, elevated parathyroid hormone and decreased phosphate levels. The patient underwent a left sided parathyroidectomy and was monitored post operatively for clinical signs of hypocalcaemia and treated with vitamin D/calcitriol. This report discusses the diagnosis and treatment of primary hyperparathyroidism in addition to the post-operative complications associated with a parathyroidectomy.
