Abstract

Architectural design is currently facing increasingly modern world pragmatic challenges such as global warming, sea level rise, pollution, inequality, social justice, and exploitation. Consequently, successful architecture aims not only to gain acceptance in terms of aesthetics but also to respond to those problems, benefit people for the common good, and promote their quality of life. Throughout three semesters of the Master of Science, Advance Architectural Design program, I experienced various global challenges in design and questions regarding the role of architecture in relation topast, present, and future issues. My thesis is about how the new methods of visualization, representation, and notational systems can highlight and address the global issues related to architectural design that are not visible or hard to perceive. According to Rob Nixon, in Slow Violence and the Environmentalism of the poor, states that " By slow violence, I mean a violence that occursgradually and out of sight, a violence of delayed destruction that is dispersed across time and space, an attritional violence that is typically not viewed as violence at all.”_ In doing so, the different types of visualization, representation, notation, and narrative were explored during my three semesters at Cornell University. They are highlighted as a medium to complicate conventional assumptions regarding violence as an obvious act that is newsworthy._ This Degree Book results from my experimental investigation into various representation methods to address global issues. Seven worldwide challenges are presented with multiple architectural approaches, representational concepts, drawings, graphic languages, and techniques in response to them. In addition, each chapter features projects from either architectural design studios or architectural elective courses, as well as design theories discussed during class to strengthen the idea ofrepresentation. For instance, Urban Simulation, using Unreal Engine was selected to represent and visualize the changes in the built environment over time, from abandoned, demolished, and gentrified according to financial crises such as household debt. Another example is dynamic and shifting drawings, and animated images were featured to represent the chronological changes in landscape due to pollution and ecological problems of the world. In conclusion, some global issues are subtle and invisible, often overshadowed by a media bias toward spectacular violence. However, the architectural industry has a spatial agency to deal with and embody these problems, primarily through representation methods and techniques.
