Abstract
Undergraduate programs in science and engineering should foster the development of intuition in computational science courses taken during the freshman year, says the author in the first of a two-part series. The second part, to be published in the October issue of SIAM News, will examine the important role of examples in building intuition and communicating the excitement of computational science.
