NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING OF HISTORIC REINFORCED CONCRETE STRUCTURES
This thesis focuses on reinforced concrete, one of the most popular building materials in the twentieth century. The main objective of this study is to assess the application of nondestructive testing methods to evaluate the condition of historic concrete structures. The research highlights the importance of NDT in giving precise information regarding any potential defects and maintaining the integrity of the structure. In addition, it examines the advantages and disadvantages of various NDT methods often used for historic structures. The study uses a careful selection of three noteworthy case studies that span a period of sixteen years across the state of New York. The case studies include the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, the Everson Museum (designed by I.M. Pei) and Snee Hall (designed by the Perkins and Will firm). This thesis then recommends a preservation strategy that emphasizes the long-term viability and historic integrity of these historic concrete structures. The results of this thesis can aid in further research to create efficient preservation and maintenance strategies for similar historic concrete structures.
