Abstract

A 14-week-old, female intact Chihuahua presented to the Cornell Soft Tissue Surgery Service for re-evaluation of a presumptive atresia ani, rectovaginal fistula and two perianal fistulae. The primary complaint involved fecal material exiting the vulvar region and straining with vocalization during defecation. Physical examination of the patient revealed fecal staining in the vulvar region and fecal material consistently exiting the vulva and two perianal fistulae. The patient had been managed conservatively up to this point with approximately ¼ teaspoon of mineral oil in each meal to soften the consistency of the feces. Due to progression of disease and continuation of poor weight gain, surgical correction was recommended. Fluoroscopy revealed a small, caudally located rectovaginal fistula which underwent surgical correction. The patient recovered uneventfully from anesthesia and received supportive care in hospital for 24 hours before being discharged.
