System of "Interlaced": A Master Planning Study for the Virginia Beach Central Beach Area Based on an Urban Functional Interaction Network
This project is a master planning study of the Central Beach Area in Virginia Beach, led by the Summer Design Scholar team at Hanbury Architecture Firm. It proposes spatial planning solutions to address urban challenges in this strategically important gateway area. Through field research, geospatial analysis, and user interviews, the team identified key challenges, including disconnection between inland and coastal zones, underused inland nodes, low off-season economic vitality, as well as the site's development potential. The project introduces the "Interlaced" design concept, emphasizing urban functional interaction. Based on this, it advances four spatial planning steps: functional zoning adjustments, construction of experiential path systems, formation of "The Loop," and identification of key nodes. These steps respond to identified challenges and aim to unlock the city's potential. The project embodies a top-down planning approach rooted in government–enterprise collaboration and interdisciplinary teamwork, exploring how integrated strategies influence urban development and inspire decision-makers.
