NEVBD reports the results of an evaluation project conducted in Ithaca, NY in June 2024. In 2012, the Village of Cayuga Heights (VCH) in Ithaca, NY initiated a deer management program, in collaboration with White Buffalo Inc., due to concerns regarding deer-related accidents and transmission of tick-borne disease. Since the start of the program the deer population has decreased from ~225 to <10 deer in the VCH. There are no data on the density of I. scapularis prior to initiation of the deer management program in the VCH. The aim of this study was to evaluate if the Village’s deer removal program reduced the abundance of I. scapularis in the Village by comparing tick abundance in the Village to tick abundance in South Hill, an area which does not have a deer removal program.
