Abstract

Vulnerability to climate change varies widely from region to region and farmer to far- mer. The paper first reviews examples of approaches that integrate On-Farm Experi- mentation concepts: i) IFAD selected partnership to empower community to carry on farmer-centric farm experimentations to support local climate change adaptation ii) FAO’s work on farmer field schools (FFS) that build farmers’ groups capacities to test, adapt and uptake different potential innovations iii) ICRAF farm-centered comparison approach developed and tested in East Africa with support from IFAD and EU to help farmers test and compare various landscape restoration options innovations. Then, the paper reflects on required approaches and partnership with research which can help ensure that these interventions consider the diversity of farmers by identifying that of households, by considering their specific needs when identifying and scree- ning innovations, and by supporting individualized farmers’ records and differentiated analysis. Finally, the paper reflects on challenges and options to scale on-farm driven experimentations through quality last mile extension services, community-driven do- cumentation of innovations (WOCAT examples), embedding dissemination modalities, and leveraging ICTs. 275 DOI : 10.17180/NP12-JB28
