A 6-year-old male pet Timneh African Grey Parrot (Psittacus erithacus timneh) was presented to the Exotic Pet Service at the Cornell University Hospital for Animals on 19 April 2017 for evaluation of a five month history of blindness. The patient was missing landings, crashing more when he flew around the house, climbing and walking more instead of flying, searching for food when held in his owner's hand or in his food bowl, and feeling for things with his feet more than with his beak. He was also spending much more time in his cage than he previously did and was sometimes startled by his owner when she approached. He lived with one other bird (an apparently healthy cockatiel) and did not have any known exposure to potential toxins. The referring veterinarian performed a brief ocular exam (no abnormalities noted) and bloodwork (increased AST, consistent with historical bloodwork). The patient was referred to Cornell for further workup.
