Abstract

Materiality plays a crucial role in the manifestation of architectural concepts into tangible, experiential spaces. According to Alvar Aalto, material identity must be recognized by the architect and articulated in their works. 1 Values are assigned to materials throughout the lifecycle of the building, including its conception, aging process and afterlife. It is in this process that the perceived value of the material alters its manifestation. Materials are evaluated both individually and as part of a larger composition, leading to the creation of diverse values. They are often influenced by the designer’s perspective and can impact the design process and the future of the structure. In this paper, different types of materiality are classified and analysed based on the associated values, with a distinction made between initial analysis and the potential evolution of significance through a design intervention.
