Global Evidence of the Effect of Phytoplankton on Fishery Resources
The subtle patterns of algae blooms have significantly influenced the equilibrium of marine ecosystems. By exploring a global data of Chlorophyll concentration, sea surface temperature and radiation from NASA Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) websites and global Fish resource biomass data from the Raw Legacy Stock Assessment Database, I found out that high concentration of chlorophyll will harm fish resource and the damaging effect tend to become more severe when the chlorophyll concentration gets higher. In addition, summer chlorophyll tends to have bigger damage to the fish resource. After calculating the economic cost of volatile algae patterns, I have found if annual chlorophyll concentration increases by 1%, we will have a finalcial loss of fish resource by 3.5 million dollars.
