Abstract
The Southeast Asia Program Bulletin is a bi-annual publication covering Cornell faculty and student research, SEAP outreach activities, as well as SEAP news and updates.
Description
This issue of the SEAP Bulletin highlights the vitality of Southeast Asian arts, pedagogy, and lived experience across the program’s global network. Christopher J. Miller reflects on musical experimentation and tradition in Java, tracing the shifting relationship between courtly and vernacular forms, while Matt Dunning documents the transformative residency of Javanese musician Heri Purwanto and its impact on collaborative learning between Buffalo and Cornell.
Ngampit Jagacinski recounts a remarkable archival rescue mission in northern Thailand, preserving sacred texts amid rapid environmental and technological change. Jolanda Mendaun Pandin offers a vivid account of the BIPAPEDA conference in Indonesia, navigating both institutional and literal storms in advancing Indonesian language pedagogy. Shaianne Osterreich reflects on the intellectual and personal journey of becoming a Southeast Asianist from within economics, while Eric Henry revisits years of collaboration with the renowned Vietnamese composer Phạm Duy.
The issue also features new publications, reflections on maritime Southeast Asia by Liang Wu, and a touching memorial tribute to Martin F. Hatch Jr., alongside program news, faculty updates, and highlights from the Gatty Lecture Series. Together, these contributions underscore SEAP’s continued commitment to scholarship, collaboration, and cultural exchange.
