Abstract

On-farm research networks (hereafter called OFRN) are managed by groups of farmers conducting trials on their own farms. OFRNs are becoming popular because they allow farmers to assess new management practices under on-farm conditions. Data collec- ted in OFRN can be used to estimate the mean effect of specific cropping practices on crop yields and to identify factors explaining the variability of yield gain or loss across trials. Typically, each trial includes two contrasting treatments replicated several times across fields. Yields are measured in each replicate by GPS-enabled yield monitors. The analysis of yield data collected in such trials could provide growers with useful information. Commonly, an elementary statistical analysis is conducted for individual studies. However, there is unexplored potential in detecting yield response variability patterns for better decision-making. There is a need for developing a framework to ana- lyze OFRN data and make the sharing and the communication of the results efficient. Interactive data visualization is an attractive solution to simplify and improve data ana- lysis and produce an intuitive understanding of OFRN results. We used a hierarchical Bayesian model for analyzing yield data collected as part of OFRNs managed by the Iowa Soybean Association. We developed an interactive web application that easily visualizes several datasets collected in on-farm strip trials. The web application provides, among other things, maps, weather, soil information, and out- puts from a statistical model estimating the effect of management practices on yield. Our approach is illustrated with two datasets to assess the effect of a fungicide on soy- bean yields and the effect of row spacing on soybean on yields. In 12 sites-years out of 43, the yield was significantly higher in soybean treated with fungicide than in untreated controls. The average yield ratio (treated/untreated soybean yield values) estimated over all trials was significantly higher than one, revealing a significant effect of fungi- cide. For the row spacing on soybean, the average yield change as a result of switching from 76-cm to 38-cm row spacing was not significant. 342 #OFE2021 – The 1st International Conference on Farmer-centric On-Farm Experimentation. Digital Tools for a Scalable Transformative Pathway – 13th-15th October 2021, Montpellier, France We also sought to understand the impact of experimental scale (small-plot trials vs. on-farm trials) on foliar fungicide on crop yield. We found similar credible intervals of the mean yield ratio for both experimental scales. The between-trial standard deviation was twice as large for the small-plot trials than for on-farm trials for corn and soybean. Our research could help farmers and agronomists make evidence-based management decisions.
