Abstract
Foreign body complications such as granulation and calcification of gastrointestinal material in snakes have been poorly represented in the literature thus far. This paper describes the procedure for surgical removal of calcified masses of gastrointestinal origin in a Liasis mackloti, as well as special anesthetic consideration when performing these procedures. Foreign bodies causing gastrointestinal obstructions are relatively common in snakes due to their ability to swallow whole pray without chewing or tearing. However, perforation of the colon and subsequent formation of calcified and granulated tissue is a much less common occurrence.
