Interactive map of usa natural disasters developed through open-source tools

Abstract

The USA has a wide range and variety of climates and environments, and with those comes a great range of natural disasters. To demonstrate and learn how to visualize data through open-source tools, an interactive map of USA natural disasters was created. The map was created and run using R packages such as shiny, dplyr, tidyverse, and leaflet. The datasets are from the Federal Emergency Management Agency [1], and US Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics [2]. With these open-source resources, an interactive and user-friendly map was made, with inputs of a date range (1952 to 2022) and a selected type of natural disaster (e.g., hurricanes, floods, fires). With this map, users can display the spread and variety of natural disasters temporally and spatially within the USA. The resulting and working interactive map shows the capability of the author to create such tools through open- source resources.
