Proliferative Pododermatitis in a Spotted Draft Horse

Abstract

A 13 year old Spotted Draft gelding was presented to the Cornell University Hospital for Animals' Equine Soft Tissue Surgery Service for evaluation and treatment of equine proliferative pododermatitis ( canker) in all 4 feet. The patient was rescued from sale for slaughter by his current owner five months earlier. He was not pmiicularly amenable to having his feet handled or to jugular venipuncture, which made treatment challenging. The initial examination was umemarkable except for obviously poor hoof condition. However, further examination of the hooves required anesthesia due to the patient's behavioral problems. Under anesthesia, filamentous lesions that were reminiscent of canker lesions were found in the hooves of both forelimbs and the left hindlimb. The most common treatment for canker is aggressive debridement of lesions followed by bandaging over a packing composed of gauze sponges soaked in I 0% benzoyl peroxide in acetone which m·e then sprinkled with crushed metronidazole. Daily repacking and bandage changes are required, which represented a prohibitive challenge in this case. Additionally, metronidazole treatment has traditionally been used on the assumption that Fusobacterium necrophorum or Bacteroides species are likely etiologic agents. Recent evidence, however, has implicated Treponema species, bovine papillomavirus, or possibly immune-mediated causes. Treatment of this case was modified to include daily footbaths using Virkon s® (DuPont Chemical Solutions Enterprise) and White Lightning® (Grand Circuit, LLC) on alternating days combined with topical oxytetracycline treatment. Five months after initial evaluation some of the canker lesions had resolved, but new lesions (thrush) had developed in two feet.
