Abstract

The goal of this project was to create and prototype open educational resources (OER) on algorithmic literacy that would support the professional development of library and archive workers by providing them with training materials and educational resources that they can share with library patrons and students. These materials address gaps in knowledge about how algorithms affect the information pipeline. The project was supported by an Institute for Museum and Library Services Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program planning grant. The project team included library workers from Cornell University, Grand Valley State University, New York University, Springfield Public Library (Massachusetts), and Westfield State University. This report outlines our approach to surveying current understandings of algorithms from stakeholders and notable scholarship, analyzing findings from our research, creating OER prototypes, evaluating the resources’ pedagogical impacts, and possible future work.
