Abstract

Throughout my master's study in the M.S.AAD program, my passion and efforts lie in finding methodologies to weave the virtual and physical artifacts in the spatial scale and past, present and future social ethos in the time scale. These include deconstructing historical theories and social events, documenting current spatial configurations and technologies, and evaluating future programs and social demands. The architectural theory course elaborates on a series of urban theories, typologies and genres embedded behind the New York City plan. All these theories presented by Robert Moose, Superstudio and Rem Koolhaas are interpreted and examed in the optional studio projects (Archipelago & One House Per Day). The designs developed in urban scales are set as a simulation in a modern social context to visualize and testify those theories in computational methodologies. Media and technologies in this process transformed the space as a retrospective installation as a bridge between past and present. In the studio project of real-time environments (Flatland), new media and space act as the portal between virtual and physical space, representing the future design approach. In the new scenario, virtual space is the extra layer that overlaps with the physical existence to create an interaction. In this way, the virtual space and creatures (Metaverse) would not just be a trope isolated from the existing value system but can be navigated and mirrored back to a physical context. Conversely, that virtual context would break through the physical periphery of the space as a new approach to defining spatial quality. With the emergence of new technologies, architecture will not be the method to involve spirituality in space, and new methodologies and rules are required for this one of the oldest professions in the world to embrace the challenge and redefine the extent of space.
