A 1-year-old Golden Retriever was presented to the Cornell University Hospital for Animals Cardiology service in May 2014 for evaluation of an arrhythmia. The diagnostic work-up for this patient included an electrocardiogram, echocardiogram, and Holter monitor. These diagnostics revealed sinus node dysfunction, presumptive atrioventricular node dysfunction and mild systolic dysfunction. Pacemaker implantation was elected. A dual chamber pacemaker was chosen to address both the sinus node and AV node disturbances, and to try to preserve physiologic pacing of the heart. This report discusses the indications for single and dual chamber pacemakers, as well as the technique for transvenous pacemaker implantation.
