Abstract

Agriculture is the main source of employment, income, and the main driver for poverty reduction in Nepal. The agriculture sector contributes 35% of the gross domestic product (GDP) and provides employment for 66% of Nepali people. Agriculture in Nepal is characterized by relatively low productivity compared to the region's average (World Bank, 2017). Approximately 80% of agriculture in Nepal is considered small-scale farming, farm households possessing less than one hectare of land (Gc & Hall, 2020). Until the late 1980s, Nepal was a net food exporter. Since then, Nepal has become a net food importer. From 2015 to 2020, staple food imports increased by 65% (Adhikari et al., 2021; World Bank, 2017). Resilient agricultural production is the first step towards poverty reduction en masse. Only a few countries in the world have succeeded in reducing poverty without first developing a robust agricultural system (Toda, 2021).
