ICE HOCKEY ELBOW PAD DESIGN TAILORED FOR FEMALE ATHLETES
The recent surge in female hockey has underscored the growing demand for hockey gear specifically tailored for women, as female players encounter challenges sharing a single sizing system with male players. This study sought to examine the challenges in design related to the elbow pads and proposed a solution through rapid prototyping. Nine female hockey players (age 20 ±1.0 years, height 164.3 ± 6.7cm, weight 62.6 ± 7.2kg) were recruited for the study. The research involved conducting semi-standardized interviews with the players, which were subsequently analyzed alongside Size USA data and comprehensive market research to identify specific issues. Interviews and 3D body scanning of the female players revealed that fit and mobility were critical concerns, as they exhibited different body proportions from their male counterparts. Drawing on the feedback provided by the players, a prototype elbow pad was developed and subsequently evaluated by the participants, as well as through controlled laboratory experiments.
