Images, Imagery and Imagination
Although architectural representation is often mentioned and discussed when the design needs to be presented, it is far more than just drawings like plans, sections, or beautiful architectural images. Representation is essentially a thinking activity based on architectural images, imagery, metaphors, and allegories. It not only occurs when the design is completed but also occurs during the whole design process, acting as an important driving force to promote design thinking. This thesis discusses several different situations in which representation plays various roles in generating and communicating ideas. Representation as a technique and process directly participates in the operation and generation of architectural forms and space. The first chapter discusses how to visually and conceptually hybridize imagery and concepts of different objects with opposite characteristics. This hybridization process to create a new image of the future is a technique of architectural representation. The second chapter mentions how another technique, the collage, can change the original meaning of the objects themselves and generate new understandings. Representation can also serve as a medium, conveying ideas and raising awareness of hard-to-see issues that otherwise would not be expressed. The third chapter describes how this medium reveals nature through animated simulation and the physical structure itself. Chapter four discusses how representation, as a tool, mirrors the characteristics of human behaviors in virtual environments. The tool is both for experiments and for analyses.
