Lisette (2022) is a 36-minute documentary tracing the long and varied history of “Lisette quitté la plaine,” the oldest published song text in early Haitian Creole. Beginning with its first musical setting in colonial Saint-Domingue, attributed to the French colonist Duvivier de la Mahautière, the film follows the song’s later adaptations by Jean-Jacques Rousseau in France, Clara Gottschalk Peterson and Camille Nickerson in Louisiana, and Ludovic Lamothe in modern Haiti. Guided by Haitian baritone and scholar Jean Bernard Cerin’s research and performance, Lisette examines how a love song about an enslaved man who has lost his beloved became a witness to empire, migration, memory, and cultural reclamation. Through archival research, performance, and conversations with leading experts in Haitian music and literary history, the documentary reveals the song as a rare surviving thread between eighteenth-century Saint-Domingue and the wider Atlantic world.
