Abstract

This publication introduces waterborne pathogens, the disease-causing organisms that contaminate water. Key organisms of concern are described in detail, including Escherichia coli 0157:H7, Cryptosporidium parvum, and Giardia species. Indicator bacteria that are normally monitored for water quality are described as well. This book will be of interest to soil and water conservation district personnel, nutrient management consultants, environmental regulators, farmer advisors, and cooperative extension specialists. Waterborne Pathogens in Agricultural Watersheds represents a proactive approach for reducing overall pathogen loading within a watershed. The viability of organisms in an agricultural setting is discussed, along with relevant management practices for controlling waterborne pathogens at their source. Harmful algal blooms are also addressed, although these organisms do not fall neatly into the category of pathogen. While foodborne pathogens are not specifically described in this publication, the pathogens that are described may contaminate both food and water. A section on pathogens in the environment discusses sources of waterborne pathogens, such as domestic livestock, land application of sewage and sludge, pets and companion animals, and wildlife like mammals and birds. Survival rates of pathogens in different environments, such as agricultural waste management systems, land application areas, and water, are also discussed. Waterborne Pathogens in Agricultural Watersheds describes a multiple-barrier approach to preventing pathogen movement off the farm -- including preventing pathogen imports to a farm, breaking the amplification cycle on the farm, properly handling the agricultural waste stream, and controlling transport from the farm. The book also provides an overview of specific methods for detecting and monitoring pathogens. This 64 page publication (NRAES-147) was originally published by the Natural Resource, Agriculture, and Engineering Service (NRAES, previously known as the Northeast Regional Agricultural Engineering Service), a multi-university program in the Northeast US disbanded in 2011. Plant and Life Sciences Publishing (PALS) was subsequently formed to manage the NRAES catalog. Ceasing operations in 2018, PALS was a program of the Department of Horticulture in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at Cornell University. PALS assisted university faculty in publishing, marketing and distributing books for small farmers, gardeners, land owners, workshops, college courses, and consumers.
