Mid-Hudson Young Environmental Scientists (MH -YES)
The 2022 Mid-Hudson Young Environmental Scientists (MH-YES) Program took place August 2-26, 2022 at Cary Institute in Millbrook, along the Fall Kill Creek in Poughkeepsie, and at Marist College. The team included two scientists, one science teacher, three undergraduate student mentors, and twelve high school students. During the three-week program, students collaboratively collected data on water and soil ecology, then divided into three groups to plan and carry out independent research studies: Effects of Personal Care Products on Different Soil Types with Varying Temperatures, Performance of Different Plant Aquatic Species in Nutrient Removal in the Fall Kill Creek, and Community Assemblage of Macroinvertebrates Across Varying Nutrient Levels in the Fall Kill Creek. MH-YES participants attended enrichment activities including field trips to Norrie Point Environmental Center, the Poughkeepsie Farm Project, and the Marist Water Lab. The students gave poster and slide presentations to the Cary community, family, and friends.
