Too often, public spaces are created for an arbitrary, non-representative, predominantly male standard. Designs which are made for this highly-biased, assumed user can make many feel unwelcome and further marginalized from spaces which are supposed to welcome everyone. Conversely, the urban public parks of Vienna, Austria are world-renowned for their attention to gender in their designs. Employing a combination of spatial audits, participant observation, interviews, and document analysis, this thesis explores what distinct design features make these parks unique, and describes how the City of Vienna was able to achieve these results. Analysis reveals that though these gender-sensitive park designs are catered towards girls, they may incidentally support adult women’s use. Planners and scholars are encouraged to continue exploring how to design parks which support adult women’s unique need for leisure.
