A previously healthy 6-year-old Pomeranian presented to Cornell's Emergency Service for a 4-hour history of abnormal behaviour. The patient had spent the day in a horse barn freely roaming with exposure to equine feces and feed. There was no specific known toxin ingestion. On presentation, the patient was dysphoric, ataxic and hyperaesthetic with mild tremors. Physical exam was otherwise within normal limits with no other neurological deficits. The patient was tentatively diagnosed with suspect toxin ingestion. Based on clinical signs, exposure to an ivermectin or moxidectin-based equine dewormer product was suspected. Moxidectin exposure was confirmed based on further history and investigation of the horse facilities. The patient was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit for seizure watch, intravenous fluid administration and decontamination with intravenous lipid emulsion (ILE). The patient's clinical signs completely resolved within 8 hours of treatment and the patient was discharged the following morning. The following case study will discuss moxidectin toxicosis and treatment options.
