An Outbreak of Sore Mouth in a Closed Flock of Sheep
Ambulatory and Production Medicine Service for evaluation of an outbreak of sores on the mouths, noses, and ears of a group of approximately 5-to 18-month-old-rams turned out on rough pastme. The index case was noted two weeks prior to presentation, and by the time of presentation, approximately two thirds of the 35 rams were affected. At the time of presentation, the flock had been closed for 23 months, and biosecurity measures were in place to prevent the introduction of diseases from visitors to the farm. However, a breach in biosecurity was noted to have occurred four weeks prior to the discovery of the index case. On presentation, the affected rams were found to have erythematous papules, vesicles, and mild crusting of the lips, noses, ears, polls, and less commonly, coronary bands, and inguinal regions. None of the 62 ewes, housed on separate pasture, were initially affected. However, approximately half of the ewes later developed lesions. Differential diagnoses included sore mouth ( orf), foot and mouth disease, sheep pox, staphylococcal dermatitis, dermatophilosis, and ulcerative dermatitis. Scabs collected from the rams on 9/20/16 were PCR positive for parapox virus, and blood from several affected rams demonstrated high antibody titers against orf virus, consistent with the diagnosis of sore mouth. Orf virus is an epitheliotrophic, zoonotic parapoxvirus that has adapted genetic strategies to evade the host immune system. It is an economically important virus of sheep and goats, and is worldwide in distribution. Morbidity can be as high as I 00%, but mortality is generally low. Treatment is supportive, and control of the virus mainly involves vaccination and strict biosecurity measures.
