Abstract

Claude Guillot studies maps and histories of three walled Malay trading cities— Malacca, Banten, and Aceh—focusing on the ways in which their physical structures provide evidence of their social structures, especially as they show enterprising foreigners were segregated from the city centers. He concludes that this segregation, and related policies, effectively stifled the development of an urban middle class or its equivalent.
