THE IMPACT OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC ON AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL MEMORY VALENCE ACROSS DEFFERENT AGES
This study examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the emotional valence of autobiographical memory across different age groups. Beginning in 2020, the pandemic significantly affected the global economy and healthcare systems, leading to increased loneliness, depression, and anxiety, especially among the elderly who faced higher susceptibility to the virus and longer isolation periods. Autobiographical memory plays a crucial role in emotional regulation, and positive memories can reduce loneliness and anxiety. A survey of 375 participants revealed significant differences in memory valence across age groups, with older adults' typical positivity bias potentially obscured by the pandemic's negative impact. These findings provide insights into the mental health effects of the pandemic and highlight the importance of emotional regulation strategies for different age groups during prolonged crises.
