Abstract

Home sewing has seen a resurgence in interest over the past three decades, yet prior research indicates that home sewers frequently experience garment fit challenges. As home sewers increasingly adopt digital resources and tools, there is a growing need to examine how digital interventions can support improved fit outcomes and sewing workflows. This study investigates home sewers’ fit challenges, adjustment practices, workflows, and attitudes toward digital tools through a formative mixed-methods study involving 50 participants. Based on these findings, a prototype system combining an interactive size chart and an automated pattern adjustment tool was developed and evaluated through in-person usability testing, user experience questionnaires, and optional interviews. Results indicate that while the interactive size chart alone primarily supported confidence and validation, the combined system significantly improved starting fit and reduced time spent on pattern adjustments. These findings suggest that well-designed digital tools embedded within the sewing workflow can meaningfully improve garment fit outcomes and support more efficient and satisfying home sewing practices.
