Newell, Alexander F
Description
A winner of the John S. Knight Assignment Sequence Prize, this sequence originates from Anthropology 197, Consuming Culture: The Language of Everyday Objects. With the goal of helping students learn to incorporate counter-arguments into their thinking and writing, the sequence asks students to focus on one of two "everyday objects": high heels and breast implants. Preparatory writing includes in-class writing in which students express their initial opinions; writing from the opposite point of view after drawing on external sources which they have researched; and writing a final essay that incorporates counter-arguments. 7 page pdf
